Why Hunterston?

Hunterston’s port has one of the deepest sea entrance channels in northern Europe and is already the UK’s foremost facility for coal imports. It also supports CO2 transport via pipeline or ship. The location also offers excellent seawater cooling, which would contribute to the high efficiency of the plant.

Peel and DONG Energy have undertaken significant research to identify the best site for a power station with carbon capture and storage technology.

The site has been safeguarded for large-scale trading and industrial development of national importance since 1971. It has also recently been identified as a nationally important site for a new power station within the National Planning Framework 2 for Scotland: a key document that defines national development policies and strategic investment priorities.

Any development at Hunterston will be part of an overall land-use plan for the Hunterston port and will not jeopardise any future development of this nationally significant site.
